3rd and 4th Grade Color Theory Trees (September, 2019)
The two Middle Pack classes explored the color wheel and talked about color relationships. We focused on colors that were next to each other on the color wheel and how they mix well together. Their challenge was to refer to the color wheel during the color blending portion of their project. They used salt resist with watercolor and chalk pastels. The tree silhouette was created using black oil pastel so not to mix with the other mediums. These were bright and beautiful!
2nd Grade Clean Ocean Study (April 2019)
2nd grade students are learning about recycling and caring for the planet through proper disposal of their waste. Using recycled aluminum cans that were crushed we turned them into sea creatures and reused paper plates for the background. These were then sent with a thank you message to our friends at Miami Waterkeepers, an organization that focuses on caring for our ocean life.
6th Grade Aluminum Lanterns (April 2019)
6th Grade carved aluminum with any design and shape that they chose using their knowledge of line and pattern. They were also able to add Sharpie coloring for further emphasis on their design. After the lanterns were complete we learned about circuits and how to add them to our lanterns using chibi-tronic lights and copper tape.
5th Grade Ugly Dolls (April 2019)
5th Grade students created ugly dolls after we learned about what they stand for. Ugly Dolls are the dolls that don't look like all the others, they are imperfect and different. In relation to being a student we talked about what made us different or special and renamed the dolls, Extraordinary Dolls, for they originality! Felt, Burlap, and sewing/embroidering techniques were used to put these little guys together.

Famous Artist Mask February 2019
Students chose from a list of famous artists whose style really inspired them. Some chose more than one artist and divided their paper mache mask into equal parts. They used glow in the dark puff paint, pom pom's, oil pastel, paint, tissue paper, and text to create these pieces. Even students who chose the same artist were creating completely unique pieces! A few students had some extra time to put masks onto canvas for a finished product!
2nd Grade Inventions February 2019
Introducing the Maker Space cart to my 2nd grade students involved a closer look at how we plan our projects and what materials and strategies we are capable of using. Some students stuck to their plan that was drawn out in the classroom while others got more ideas from using the materials and the construction process. We were able to give some time to share these inventions which really brought their thinking to light. Students were able to use duck tape, masking tape, cardboard cutters, recycled materials, and glue guns! It was amazing to see the hidden doors, latches, and moveable parts these pieces had!
5th Grade Preps For The Art Show!
5th Grade worked collaboratively to get all their projects hung and mounted. They completed almost all the WES installations in just two class periods!
2nd Grade Self Portraits November, 2018
Second grade has been looking into their identity as far as their "House a Home" unit goes in class, and we decided to do self portraits with ink! We looked at our eye, skin, and hair color. We looked at what makes our appearance unique, such as, freckles or glasses. They colored their self-portraits with crayons and created a watercolor background.
6th Grade Egyptian Symbols and Canopic Jars November, 2018
In the 6th grade classroom these students are learning about Ancient Civilizations. We are creating Canopic Jars and studying the symbolism of Ancient Egypt. The students created papyrus paintings as well while we sculpted with clay and used paper mache on our bottles.

After learning about value and pattern, we created animal outlines to fill with different Zentangle designs. Watercolor was then added to put emphasis on the animal or the background. Great project to build confidence and cover many different art elements!
Kindergarten Painting with Textures October 2018
To start our painting practice we began by using texture rollers and scrappers to make our painted paper! We used yellow and blue and discovered that we could make green! This texture is then added to our snakes to create a weaving design.
Preschool Studies Shape October, 2018Preschool students have been learning to sort and match different shapes. We used shape templates to trace different shapes. You could try and create another picture using the shapes or just randomly place the shapes on their paper with crayon. We used wax resist and painted with color-bleeding tissue so the shapes would still be visible! Students were encouraged to mix the colors by overlapping the tissue.

Art Club! September, 2018
Another great year of Art Club starts with our 6th graders painting a mural for Nurse Courney's office. Something comforting and beautiful. Look how well they work together!
Value Lesson with 6th Grade
The 6th grade class learned about creating value with graphite with controlled pressure. Then we discussed creating value in Sharpie using the hatching and cross-hatching designs. Each student made two patterns that they placed on the board and as a team we created a value scale using black and white patterns. We then discussed how contrast is built using the darker against the lighter values. They will be using this technique in their project. Each student has chosen an animal for their subject and is showing their understanding of pattern within the animal or on the background.
Kindergarten Learning Line
We are learning about different kinds of lines and making sure to be using our watercolors correctly with student modeling! We used crayon first which allowed the students to use the resist technique.
Hands of Celebration with 4th Grade
4th grade is learning about patterns and different color schemes. They are working to use a number of different materials to fit the shapes of their hands. We added a 3D element to our piece to really create the feeling of confetti falling all around our project.
Shapes with Preschool (3)
These new preschool students are just being introduced to some art supplies and different elements of art. Here we learned to make pictures using shapes! Some made rocket ships after my demonstration, while others made trains, boats, and even monkeys!
Kindergarten Creates Texture Paintings
Kindergarten is being introduced to texture by using different materials to paint. We used sponges, bleeding tissue paper, paint scrapers, and even toy cars to paint!
Name Sculptures with 5th Grade
5th Grade is learning about pattern using line and shape. They used the letters of their name to create a 3D sculpture. Some students had to problem solve by adding additional shapes to get their sculptures to stand on their own, others used creative shapes to add originality.
3rd Grade Crazy Hair Day
After an interactive demonstration on the proper use of watercolor, the 3rd grade students painted their "Crazy Hair Day" portraits showing their knowledge of line. We took it a step further at the end of our art class and made our own crazy hair sculptures from pipe cleaners!
1st Grade Shape Robots
The first graders build their shape robots after talking about what different shapes we could combine to make a successful robot. They used different colors and textured paper and then added any extra details using crayon and marker. They were so excited about these bots that they HAD to take them home that day!
Sketchbooks!!!
5th, 4th, and 3rd grade classes are given time to complete their sketchbook covers! Some chose to use cool colors, some chose warm, or a mixture of both. These will be where the students do their mini sketching assignments, free-draws, and other activities.
Third Grade Texture Town
In third grade we created brightly painted paper using different materials to put texture into our paintings. We then took our paper and cut it up to look like mountains, suns, and wherever else our creativity took us. After learning how to create an origami house we added the three dimensional forms to our landscape.
Dot Painting with 1st Grade
We listened to the story called "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds. In this story the main character does not think that she can draw but learns that she can be creative just by starting with something as simple as a "Dot". We painted our dot (plates) with many colors and then added patterns for details. We will then be adding a weaving to the center to complete our dot paintings.
Spiders with PreK (Cubs 1)
Today Cubs 1 had art class in the art room for their very first time! They built spiders to scare the students of Orwell in the halls for Halloween!
Goofy Pumpkins with Kindergarten
Kindergarten continued their work with texture painting these orange and yellow pumpkins, we then used the paper to make their backgrounds. Using different shapes and cut paper we created goofy faces and stems to give them extra character. I love how different each student made theirs look.
6th Grade Perspective City
Learning one point perspective is a difficult task! 6th graders took on the challenge to do this and they did a wonderful job. All their buildings and details down to the windows were lined up with their vanishing point to create the illusion of space!
4th Grade Metepec Sun Faces
4th Grade learned all about this Mexican art called Metepec Sun Faces. These are usually reliefs created out of clay but we made reliefs from Styrofoam plate pieces and tinfoil. We colored the tinfoil with sharpie and then painted the paper plate frames to mount them on. Students then completed and refined their artwork to exhibit by weaving the outside edge with yarn.
5th Grade Radial Symmetric
The 5th Grade is learning about balance and symmetry in art. We created patterns on triangle pieces of tracing paper and using an ebony pencil we were able to copy this design around our square to produce a radially symmetric design. We were then able to color our design but kept the colors symmetric as well!
4th Grade Color Theory Ornaments
To kick off the holiday art lessons, 4th grade learned about analogous colors (colors beside each other on the color wheel) and learned to blend these using chalk pastel. We created our ornaments using circles and then the students looked at their color wheel tool while they chose which colors they wanted to blend. We added the evergreen needles after and they were stunning!
5th Grade Value Paintings
In 5th Grade we learned about the tints and shades of a hue. We then created a landscape using the tints and shades to show space or depth in our paintings. Over the top we created a silhouette of our choice.
6th Grade Color Mixing Challenge
Using our primary colors (including turquise and magenta) and white we saw how many colors we could make. With each color we then decided if this color was warm or cool. The shape of the grid was to be filled with the cool colors while the background is where we placed the warm (some flipped the two).
5th Grade Stained Glass Windows
After watching a "How It's Made" video on stained glass we made our own design for a stained glass window. The design could be as simple or as complex as they would like them to be. The students used circle tracers and lines to create their designs and then outlined them in sharpie marker.
3rd Grade Optical Illusions
After looking at many optical illusions we began to create our own showing depth and space. We created depth using line and color change.
4th Grade Dream Catchers
Kindergarten Pattern Hearts
For our first large scale paintings in Kindergarten we practiced controlling our brush like a pencil and following our lines we had drawn. These lines and shapes were showing different patterns that filled a giant heart! We also created abstract Valentines by looking at the art of Mondrian. This K group really understood how to balance their pieces with color and line.
Grade 4 Wacky Wildcats
Inspired by the colorful art of Russo we created Wacky Wildcats in Grade 4. A step by step helped us to get the correct outline that we then went over in black paint for a big bold outline. We colored using chalk pastels, making sure to use analogous colors for a nice combination!
After school Art History
3rd Grade Color Theory SunflowerAfter learning about the famous "Sunflowers" by Vincent Van Gough we talked about color and why his painting was successful in his use of color. We decided cool versus warm colors creates great contrast and blended with our oil pastels; a new technique for these talented kids!

2nd Grade Variety Vases
Not only did the second grade use a variety of lines and shapes to create their flowers but they also used a variety of materials! Tissue paper bleeding with water created these multi color backgrounds after they cut a symmetrical shape for their vase and covered it with patterns. For more detailed painting they used their watercolor pallets and the oil pastel for the resist lines.
First Grade Still Life Paintings
1st Grade learned about variety and the combination of different lines and shapes that could represent flowers. We painting these outlines with black paint on giant paper. Our flowers were then stained with tissue paper and water to give them a stained glass effect. This class loves to explore different composition ideas so I allowed them to choose what flowers they cut out and how they would fill there paper. Many liked the vase idea while others were more abstract.
First Grade Crazy Cocoa Mugs
Rhythm and pattern have a lot in common in art! The more beats in a rhythm the more exciting they are just like the amount of line variety and color you use in a pattern. We made many rhythms on our colored paper and then made them into hot cocoa mugs. For extra texture we decided to add cotton as steam.
Second Grade Dot Trees
"The Dot" is a book we read in art because it tells the story of a little girl who thinks she can't draw. Her art teacher tells her to draw a dot and this begins the young girls exploration of how many dots she can make. After learning about variety we decided to see how different we could make our dots. For the background the students were only told to watercolor and to show some indication of the ground and the sky.
First Grade Koinobori Kite
In Japan we learned about a Children's Day celebration for all the children of Japan. Each family flies a fish that resembles a Koi fish in the air to represent each child. We used special crayon rubbing plates to make the scales and watercolored the fish for extra color!
Optical Illusions with 5th Grade
5th Grade learned about how to create the illusion of space by using a vanishing point and patterned stripes with oil pastel. We took animated photos of us falling or helping each other up to add another medium. This project was a great brain break for them and allowed this class to express they preforming arts side.
Under the Sea with Grade 4
4th Grade practiced their observational drawings after learning about the coral reef. We used simple shapes to draw all kinds of creatures making sure to include their proper habitat. A good friend of mine works for a water conservation company in Miami, Florida. We will be surprising her with these pictures for her to advertise with! She sent pictures to the students of the artwork that was hung up in her office and a thank you video telling the students what they can do to help their environment.
