PreK Lines and Painting (February, 2020)
PreK students used black oil pastel to replicate lines that we are learning about. Wavy, zig-zag, loopty-loop, swirl, and some shapes too. They then took paint to decorate their papers and add to their design!
3rd and 4th Spread Kindness (February, 2020)
Kindergarten-4th Grade learned about the Artist Romero Britto and thought about his concept of "making peoples hearts smile" with his artwork. We decided to make Shrewsbury Schools heart smile with bright colors and patterns in hearts. These neon paints and crayons glow in the black light!

Line and Shape Owls (October, 2019)
PreK used different shapes to create owls including circles, triangles, and some added texture by layering different shades of brown paper for feathers. The Kindergarten and First Grade created their owls by cutting out the owl shapes from the their practice in painting different kinds of lines
3rd and 4th Grade Weaving (April 2019)
The 3rd and 4th grade learned how to weave and were also inspire by other weaving artists who created landscapes using different types of yarn to create pictures in their weaving. After we create a loom and finished our project we collected sticks to mount our weavings and use nature in the process. We also went outside and tried to weave with natural materials they we found in our outdoor classroom.
K/1 Van Gough Vases (April 2019)
These Van-Gough vases were created with reused puzzle pieces to get a texture that popped off the page. We used line design for the background in watercolor, cut paper and shape to make our flowers, and oil pastel to refine and finalize our work. All these materials made this project a blast and not one looking the same as another.
K/1st Grade Maps of Sit Spots, Schools, and Homes (March, 2019)
Kindergarten and First grade is learning about maps and we created a visual map using their outdoor classroom sit spots, the school, and their homes. They thought about what kinds of things were surrounding those areas and used oil pastel, watercolor, and cut paper.

The Mill River District Show is only a month away! April 28th-May 4th the students will be showing their work at the Sparkle Barn in Wallingford. Their projects are ready, but the decorations and the poster advertisements are whats next on our agenda. Giant pencil panting, giant crayon creation, and collages of pictures in the Art Room!
3rd and 4th Grade Paper Circuits and LED Creations (March 2019)
Grade 3 and 4 create LED light circuits using Chibitronics. We worked with special ink for the backgrounds and created a foreground of our choice that we would like to glow! These students did an amazing job and these will all be on display at the art show!.
Shrewsbury Mountain School
Preschool Landscapes November, 2018
Preschool learned how to create a background or setting for their picture using mountains and added texture to the grass for their house. We used simple shapes to build our house and then began to add details using squares for the windows, a circle for our sun, and rectangle door. Our finishing touches were done in crayon!
3rd and 4th Grade Falling Leaf Resist November, 2018
3rd and 4th graders are learning about trees in the classroom and is working on leaf identification in Science! We took different leaf prints and created a composition that showed movement, variety, space, and balance. After coloring with crayon we created a tissue paper resist for the background.
K/1 Weaves with Snakes October, 2018
Kindergarten and First Grade did some texture painting with toy cars and paint scrapers. They mixed yellow and blue for the grass and then created snakes. We talked about survival of the snakes and why they use the grass to hide while learning to weave!
2nd Grade Makes their "Home" October 2018
Integrated in their "House a Home" unit in the classroom the 2nd graders created collage houses from Popsicle sticks that they painted, colored paper, watercolor, and texture paper. We talked about how "home" isn't about the structure of the house but the feelings you get, sometimes people in your life are what make you feel at home.
R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. Rainbows K/1 October 2018
Kindergarten and First Grade learned about what each letter of R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. stands for to help them remember their rainbow order. This helps with the color wheel knowledge and color mixing!
6th Grade Value Painting October 2018
These canvases are beautiful that 6th grade is working hard on. They are demonstrating their understanding of value with a monocramatic background. We will be creating a silhouette and mountain range to show space. Then in connection with their science unit we will add constellations and these will light up! I can't wait to see them when they are all finished!

Shrewsbury Mountain School
SMS is a beautiful school of about 87 students from Preschool through 6th grade.
Line Sculpture Building with K-2nd
Students at SMS discussed what makes a sculpture and created structures using paper and their knowledge of line. We created swirls, zig-zags, and curls! Here they are carefully constructing each piece learning the importance of balance.
Hands of Celebration: Grade 3/4
We are beginning our Hands of Celebration project with 3rd and 4th grade. Students will be showing their knowledge of line, shape, pattern and color! We begin by learning about and practicing different patterns within the shape of our hands.
Line Painting with K/1st Grade
First, we learned about all the different kinds of lines that we can make in art. Then we demonstrated that learning with crayon. Using watercolor we covered our page to let our lines "POP" using the resist technique.
Pipe Cleaner Sculptures
2nd Grade has been studying lines. We created our sculptures from pipe cleaners so we could mold the different lines we draw when creating a piece of artwork.
K/1 Color Mixing
Students are learning their primary colors and what might happen when the primary colors are mixed together. They will travel to each color center with a map that tells them what to primaries create when combined.
3rd and 4th grade created different painted papers using textures in their paintings. They learned about foreground, middle ground, and background and then created their landscapes with the painted paper. Some added yarn and oil pastel to their collage as well!
Grade K/1 Cocoa Collage
Kindergarten and 1st Grade learned about how we can create rhythms with patterns. We used oil pastel on colored paper and then cut these out to add on top of origami paper backgrounds. Using cotton balls we made steam that added texture to our colorful hot cocoa collages!
K/1 Circle Weaving
After a read-aloud of the book The Dot, we decided to make dots of our own! We used paper plates and painted them using many different colors. We created a loom using slots around the edges of the paper plate to weave around the center with different colors of yarn. These lovely art pieces are displayed on the school tree as you enter the building.
Grade 2 Van Gogh Vases
This project taught us a lot about art making and the artist Van Gogh was our inspiration! We created symmetrical vases using colored paper and decorated the vases with patterns. We made an interesting bouquet of flowers by using many different lines and shapes of many different sizes and colors. The last step was watercolor to create a beautiful background.
K/1 Monet's Garden
Grade 2 Warm and Cool Metepec Sun
After learning about warm and cool color theories and what they portray in art we created a balanced piece using the sun and moon. Also known as the Metepec Sun we created a sun and moon oil pastel painting.
