4th-6th Grade Character Maps
Grades 4-6 are writing stories in ELA and developing their characters and plot. We used Art Class to illustrate what our characters looked like and created a Character Map. I used Spongebob as an example for the students. This tells a lot about their character and acts a s a quick reference while writing in the classroom!

Students in 1st and 2nd grade talked about line and pattern. We overlapped heart shapes and then filled the spaces with different patterns using lines and shapes. They then used blacklight responding Neon paint and crayons to decorate! Just in time for Valentines day, the students talked about the importance of being kind to others and the symbol of a heart.
Kindergarten Curriculum begins with Line, Shape, and Color! (August and September, 2019)
After learning about all the different lines that we are able to make, Kindergarten explores how to build a Castle using cut paper shapes. They can get as creative as they would like and also add details using crayons when they are done. We also study the rainbow, and how they are made; then of course the color order! Students created these amazing rainbows using watercolor!
Painting in Nature (September, 2019)
The fall colors are starting to show around Tinmouth and we wanted to explore by painting while we observed the colors around us. Students used their skills in drawing a tree that were gained during our pastel project and then they added the leaves using a impressionistic brush technique!
Exploring the colors of Autumn and Leaf Portraits (October, 2019)
Students collected many of the fall leaves that covered the ground around the school playground. We sorted them by color and then used colored paper, beans, and shells to create these silly portraits using our leaves for hair, ears, beards, and eyebrows!
Grade 3 Color Theory Trees (September 2019)
Grade 3 worked with colors that are harmonious and "neighbors" on our color wheel to create strong blending patterns within their oil pastel tree. The chalk pastels were a lot of fun, and messy!
Grade 1 and 2 Sunflower Observation (September 2019)
Grade one and two are studying Sunflower's in their classroom and other stages of plant life. We discussed observation, making positive improvements, and drawing from life in our Nature Journals. These beautiful drawings were created outside in our outdoor garden and they were planted by these very students last year!
Trout Aluminum Lanterns (4/5/6th Grade) March 2019
The 4th, 5th, and 6th Graders are growing studying their trout in the classroom. They used their knowledge to create the trout drawings on aluminum and chose what texture was best for the water, the plant-life, and the fish scales. When the students finished covering their aluminum in different textures they wrapped the strip to form a cylinder shape and hung the lanterns from fishing line.
PreK Recycling Unit (March, 2019)
After talking a little bit about recycling and reusing these little artists got right to work! We made standing sculptures from tons of materials that we didn't want to throw away. Whimsical and wonderful creations will be in our art show!

Kindergarten/1st Grade Sunflowers October, 2018
The Kindergarten and First Grade are studying parts of a plant in the classroom. We watched the video Austin's Butterfly and learned about critique and drafting. After observing sunflower structure like a scientist, the children created a oil pastel drawing that was them watercolored. The paper plate was painted using tempera and by mixing yellow with a hint of red for an authentic color. The seeds were placed on the project to show how the sunflower spreads and grows.
2nd and 3rd Grade Nests October, 2018
2/3 Spider Webs September 2018
The 2nd and 3rd grade teacher is so fabulous with letting the kids explore nature in creative ways. I assisted her in letting the kids create their very own spider webs after learning about all the different kinds there were! They were very engaged!
K/1 Line Monsters September, 2018
After learning the different kinds of lines we practiced writing the lines with oil pastel and then tracing with watercolor paints. Using cut paper and our line sculpting knowledge we added the arms and legs. Students also reviewed how to cut and paste for the eyes.
2nd and 3rd Grade Insects September, 2018
Integrating their Science curriculum into the art room was an exciting first project! Students learned about the parts of an insect, and the appearance of the head and wings in the classroom by drawing their particular insect. In the art room we learned about symmetry in nature and also positive and negative space. The students incorporated their understanding from the line unit for their final background.
Preschool Learns Their Shapes September, 2018
Preschool learned about shapes by sorting them into correct piles. Next the shapes were pictures of things that resembled the four core shapes we had learned. They sorted the pictures and then they created a shape worksheet! They also created rocket ships using the shapes they had learned about! (September, 2018)

Starting 2018 with Line
2nd-6th graders created line sculpture portraits! They were taught the different types of line, challenges to make them three-dimensionally, then apply their learning and follow the portrait map to tell a little about themselves! It was fun to learn these things about the students, build connections, and see commonalities. Their conversations between one another during the lesson built a great classroom culture! (August, 2018)
Preschool studies line as well by adding color sorting to their start of class challenge. Once these lines were sorted be chose colors for our magic carpets, then we added fun pattern lines in zig-zag and wavy.
K-3 Line Sculptures (September, 2017)
For our first day of Art Class at Tinmouth Elementary we build sculptures out of paper to study different kinds of lines!
Bridge Drawing Grade 4-6th
Stay tuned to see how these 4th, 5th, and 6th graders create a realistic image of their chosen bridge. We will be investigating working from a photograph, identifying angles and shapes, and participating in ongoing critiques with one another to get these images as accurate as possible. So far they have taken on the challenge to create multiple drafts and work collaboratively! The following class we created silhouettes of our bridges that we will be including in our final paintings. After discussing the impressionistic paintings of Monet and Van Gough, we imitated their painterly landscapes using warm and cool colors to build contrast between the sky and the sea. We discussed emphasis and chose what to emphasize within our background.
Crazy Hair Day with Grade 2&3
After studying different kinds of lines the students demonstrated their creativity using them as crazy hair for their portraits! We then added watercolor the following class using the wash and resist technique.
Discover Time with Preschool
Ending their day in art class, this preschool loves to have discovery stations. Some using shapes and gluing, others with pipe cleaner sculptures and puddy.
Rocket-Shapes with Kindergarten
Kindergarten learned about line and created crayon resist paintings. They used the wash technique with watercolor paints. We discussed how combining lines creates shapes, and combining shapes creates an image. We build Rockets out of these shapes and used our line paintings for the flames!
Rainbow Fish with PreK |
After learning about the rainbow fish we used tissue bleeding and paper towel roll stamps to create the background and fish textures. The following class we added some tissue paper and beads for seaweed and shells while cutting out our rainbow fish and adding shiny scales.
|
Texture Painting with K/1st
After learning about the illustrator Eric Carl and his use of painted tissue in his illustrations, we decided to try! Using sponges, toy cars, and scrapers we were able to create many different designs.
2nd/3rd Grade Oil Pastel Blending
Happy Halloween! From First GradeA generous parent donated these super sweet coffins for the students to decorate! We used liquid water colors and crayon drawings to create a resist. This blended nicely to look as if the coffins were stained and old. We made mummies out of pipe cleaners wrapped in yarn to hide inside!

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? by Kindergarten
Kindergarten created textured paper using combs, toy cars, and sponges with paint. They then learned about the painted paper collage art of Eric Carl and read "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" They then cut the shapes to create their bear and added their own details with marker at the end.
5th Grade Perspective
One point perspective is being mastered by the 5th Grade! They learned about created 3D shapes using a vanishing point and horizon line. Then they took that knowledge and created a cityscape in one point perspective!
6th Grade Zentangle Animals
6th Grade has finished their Zentangle Animals and they did a wonderful job. They used a lot of creativity on their backgrounds by using markers. We learned that taking the time to draw an animal a few times really helps in developing their drawing skills. We used contrasting patterns to make sure that our ink designs stood out and became a successful composition.
Kindergarten Snow Hats
First Grade Shape CityFirst Graders finished up their city they created all from shapes. We studied the art of Paul Klee and he inspired our oil pastel outline and bright colors!
|
Kindergarten is using their understanding of pattern and shape to decorate winter hats. These will become 3D projects that will be a beautiful way to welcome winter!
|
PreK Winter Projects
PreK did a great job following directions and putting shapes together to create a winter village. We added marker to decorate with ornaments and lights. Next we added white paint for snow by dabbing with our paint brushes.
Using paper bags and cut outs from paper and foam we made Eskimo puppets! We also added glitter starts to the jackets and some tissue for the furry hoods! |
Kindergarten Weaving Challenge
Weaving is challenging, but so much fun once we got the hang of it! We decorated and framed our woven paper rugs so they were ready for the hall! We challenged ourselves even further by adding a yarn weaving around the frame.
5th Grade Zentangle Animals
5th Grade worked so hard on their Zentangle Animals. We learned about contrasting values and how to create this using light and dark patterns for a successful composition.
Kindergarten Monet's Garden
Kindergarten is making great connections with their knowledge about line to create a colorful pond before adding their waterlilies. Their waterlilies are made using oil pastel. They learned the "artist" way to blend their colors using paper towels. These waterlilies will be added to their ponds along with some flowers for texture. These pieces are inspired by Claude Monet.
5th Grade Tigers
After learning about the artist Dean Russo and his psychedelic colors and patterns we decided to use the animal the tiger for our wild animal pastel painting. On black paper we put a white outline using paint and filled the shapes with chalk pastel colors. We used our color wheel to figure out what colors would work best.
